About the Artist Dale StrongInspired by the nature surrounding his childhood home in a remote village in rural Minnesota, Dale Strong paints majestic landscapes of a proportion that nearly envelops the viewer.
Realist Landscape ArtistHis paintings depict only places that exist His remarkable panoramas of the west, especially the Teton Mountains in Northern Wyoming, and spectacular Mediterranean vistas tell stories of his travels and upbringing. Frequently the backsides of napkins, old envelops, and matchbook covers become ersatz sketchbooks. When he's ready to paint, viewing these renderings transports him back to the original scene and he literally smells the scents, senses the air, and hears the sounds of the locale. Unique Style & MethologyWorking with a slightly unorthodox method of oil painting, Dale Strong uses converted ice tea spoons to apply paints to canvas. By eliminating the use of brushes and linseed oil he retains the brilliance and intensity of the colors, while also deterring deterioration of the work. Although he uses a brush sparingly for intricate detail work, Strong relies almost exclusively on the spoons. PhotographyPrior to beginning his painting career, Dale's love of the landscape prompted him to study photography in the late 40's and he excelled to such a level that he was retained by Life Magazine to cover commemorative occasions and sporting events. Education / StudiesTo maximize his knowledge and hone his technique, Strong studied painting at such varied institutions as Minneapolis Institute of Art. Rocky Mountain Polytechnic Institute in Montana, New York Institute of Art, Washington School of Art, The National Academy of Art in Paris, France, and The National School of Art in Florence, Italy. In addition to his formal schooling, he studied privately with such notable artists as Darrel Kenyon, Norman "Jake" Jacobson, Conrad Schweiring, and Arthur Kerner. He has also taught painting at many schools, private classes. And has been a featured painter on the National Networks of PBS television stations.
